THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS

Prayer: I want my thoughts to be of You, Lord Jesus, with gratitude that You came. I am grateful You are with me still to guide me this day. Thank You.

Scripture: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NIV

I have always heard, “It’s the thought that counts,” but as in this verse I would like to add, “It’s the thoughts and attitude of the heart that count.”

Do you have a responsibility that you grumble about? Perhaps you got “talked into” teaching Sunday school or you have been put on the list to serve once a month doing nursery duty. Are you a volunteer mom or dad at one of your kid’s activities that you dread each week, or is it your week for cafeteria or parking lot duty during your lunch period?

I have “thought” about doing many good things, but the “thought” does NOT get them done! I have done many “good things” while complaining, or wishing that I did not have to do them. I doubt God was very proud in those moments. What good is my to-do list if it is stained with impure motives and sinful behavior? It is only when I go about things with a glad heart, without thinking of myself or seeking reward or praise that I know I am serving the Lord in a way that glorifies and pleases Him.

There are some things we choose to do and others that we have to do, but we always get to choose our attitude. Every day is filled with opportunities to fulfill God’s purpose for us. Today’s verse tells us that it is our thought and attitude that will be judged; we cannot hide those from God. We need to get our spirit right before we start. Service or selfishness, grateful or grudging, privileged or pride, you choose your attitude.

How can each of us carry out the attribute of having the right thoughts and attitude in our daily environment (classroom, hallways, meetings, cafeteria, office, etc.)?
