Prayer: Oh Lord, we ask You to keep our hearts and minds continually renewed to Your eternal truth and not mixed up with confusing messages and half-truths that come from our family, friends and culture. Please help us lead with honest and simple truth.
Scripture: In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again’ John 3:3 NIV
After Sunday lunch we settled down on the floor to work on a color-by-number sheet that my daughter had brought home from church. I have never been a big fan of these worksheets that tell you what color you are supposed to use instead of allowing you to make the flowers whatever color you want—but that’s another lesson. Deciding this worksheet would be a good lesson in following instructions instead of art, I agreed to help by reading the name of each color to her. First, we had to find orange. Seemed simple enough. We have a huge bucket of crayons that we began to dig through, but each time we thought we found “orange” it turned out to be red-orange, apricot, melon, cantaloupe, yellow-orange, peach, neon carrot, or macaroni and cheese. I couldn’t believe that all these shades appeared to be orange, but with a closer look were really orange diluted, or mixed with other colors. We had to dig and dig to finally find “ORANGE.”
Now compare this to God’s Word. His Word is the only Truth. The Bible is the only real truth. You will hear people spout off quotes and old sayings. Friends may tell you “my grandma always said,” or “I’ve always heard…” Beware! Many times you will hear something that sounds close to what you have read in Scripture but it is not exactly as it is stated in the Bible. Like these crayons, this advice may have a hint of the truth but then it is diluted with someone’s opinion, interpretation, or mixed with their own experiences.
In a world full of self-help books, shows and advice, remember that Jesus said, “I tell you the truth.” Truth can only be found in your Bible. If you cannot find it in Scripture, God’s Word, then it is not truth. Please pray for those who are confused, or have been misled by untruth cleverly disguised as truth that was even shared as a better way than Biblical truth. What kind of untruths do you hear in the media and within your own school? What are people searching for?
