GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS
February 27, 2019

Prayer:  My prayer for you is that you would know that His lovingkindness never ceases, His compassion never fails and GREAT is His faithfulness.

Scripture:  Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness. 20 Surely my soul remembers And is bowed down within me. 21 This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. 22 The LORD’S loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.” 25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.
Lamentations 3:19-25 NAS

While on a Pray for America bus tour in New Hampshire God blessed me with a lesson on being grateful because He is faithful. We had made it a practice to get our hotel reservations on an internet site that allowed for a greatly reduced rate but not much information about your selected hotel. Some nights were good and some… not so good, but we were thankful for the rest. In New Hampshire, our hotel room was exceedingly comfortable, my roommate Lisa and I kept referring to it as, “ridiculous” because of its amenities even though it had cost us a lot less than many of our other rooms.

The next morning I awoke with the hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” on my heart. I sang and hummed my way through the morning, unable to get that song off of my mind. Even if I tried to sing a different song, I always ended up back on “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” We traveled on the bus to go pray and minister to many hurting and homeless people in a popular park in town. We were delighted by their warmth and openness with us. We talked and prayed for several hours, at one point we were talking with them about thankfulness. We proposed that even in the direst of circumstances, one can still find something to be thankful for. One of the ladies pointed to a park bench and expressed her thankfulness for that bench. I asked her if she had ever slept on that bench and she said she had slept under it the night before and it had protected her from some of the rain. My heart ached at the thought of her under the bench while I had slept in “ridiculous” comfort, but the lesson was not over.

A little later, our team leader said, “I feel like someone has a song on their heart that we should sing together, who wants to suggest the song?” Without hesitation the lady who had slept under the bench shouted out, “Great is Thy Faithfulness!”

There are no words to describe the flood of emotions that followed. I wept uncontrollably, knowing that God had put the same song on the heart of a lady who had slept in the mud under a bench. In her affliction she not only remembered His deeds, but shared them with us. She sang loud and strong with a smile on her face, “All I have needed they hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.” May I never forget this lesson!

God has shown great faithfulness to you too! I think about the number of prayer requests we receive each week concerned over possible disasters, disease, violence, changes in your school or district, etc… that are averted or never came to pass. What does it mean to be “faithful?” Do we fully understand and trust the reliability of His continual faithfulness? Share with one another how GREAT His faithfulness has been towards you.

Such a beautiful song that helps us remember the truth of our Lord’s character. And what an amazing story to make it that more impactful. Thank you for sharing your encouraging story.

I’m so glad I read this devotion today. I’ve been thinking that currently there’s not much hope for me. But I know now that I really have so much from God that I should be grateful.
