FOUNDATIONS OF LEARNING
November 28, 2018

Prayer: May we have a firm faith foundation of early learning that increases our success and progress.

Scripture: Doing wickedness is like sport to a fool, And so is wisdom to a man of understanding.  What the wicked fears will come upon him, But the desire of the righteous will be granted.  When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.
Proverbs 10:23-25 NAS

Sometimes I have to laugh at some of the articles and research information I receive about education. I have to wonder how much money and how many years were spent coming to the “Ah ha” conclusion that seems like common sense to most people. I often wonder, “Who questioned that enough to refute it until they proved it?” For example, I received an article that concluded that, “early learning in math is key to later math success.” The article stated that there is a need to understand the basics because knowledge is incremental and gets more complex. The study concludes that, “Without a good foundation, a student won’t do well.”

My apologies to those who gave thousands of dollars and hours of time to this study; but I have to ask, “Really?” Did we not know before this year that early learning affects later success? I would be so bold as to conclude that a good foundational learning in any subject will increase success as they progress. Could this be true in life as well as math? Please do not read this with a sarcastic tone, I am sincerely taking one truth and applying it to a larger picture. Life certainly gets more complex with every passing year of our lives. The elementary school student has no idea the challenges and responsibilities that face them in Middle or High school. The High School graduate who thinks they have life all figured out has no idea of the responsibilities and challenges that await them in College, as a family provider, in their career and marriage.

Life builds on itself. I have heard and read many commentaries on today’s Scripture, and I still stand by the fact that God does not give us more than we can handle. He provides the Way, the Truth and the Light. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We are empowered, educated and enlightened by His Spirit in us and so I conclude, knowing all of this and more, that He will bring us through anything He brings us to. We can usually look back at past experiences; trials and victories, and learn from them. We can see His hand guiding and protecting us and we know disaster awaits if we decide to, “go it alone.” Following God early in the path leads to later success. How many people do you know that say, “I wish I had been a Christian earlier in life, it would have saved me from a lot of pain and regret?” Or how about, “I wish I had just done what I knew I was supposed to do, and I would not be in this mess.” When we apply what we have learned earlier to current situations, even if the situation or equation is different, foundational facts will still help you come to a successful resolution.
