EXPERIENCE AND EXPRESS GOD’S UNCHANGING GOODNESS
March 9, 2018

Prayer:  Lord may we take refuge in You, reflect on Your faithfulness and reveal the fruit of Your faithfulness to others that they too may taste and see that the Lord is good.

Scripture: I will bless the LORD at all times ; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul will make its boast in the LORD ; The humble will hear it and rejoice. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and He answered me, And delivered me from all my fears. 5 They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces will never be ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him And saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them. 8 O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:1-8 NAS

I love this Psalm, it could actually be sliced into several devotions, but today I wanted to serve the whole pie, so that you could “taste and see that the Lord is good.”  This Psalm is a pledge of faithfulness to a faithful God. The commitment rolls off the psalmist heart and tongue, “I WILL bless, praise, boast in the Lord, humble myself, rejoice, magnify, and exalt God. Precious friends, I want to stop right there for a second and submit to you that this is the recipe for a happy life – not just a blessed joy-filled life- but also a happy earthly life. The psalmist commits to do these things at all times, continually, and “together.” He is reaching out to others and reminding himself and others of God’s greatness, faithfulness and goodness. He reminds us today, that our unchanging God still answers us when we seek Him. God still delivers us from our fears. He forgives and restores all sinners who call on Him as Lord, from shame to a shining, radiance that never need look back at the pit of guilt. God saves us from our troubles, encamps around us and rescues us from every snare this world would dare to set against us.

Take all of that in for a moment; reread it if you need to. Indeed the Lord is good. These verses are filled with promises and attributes of the One True Unchanging God. The specific details of responsibility and response are clearly written out in these verses, summed up in the statement, “How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” But what does it mean to, “take refuge?”

“Refuge” in the original Hebrew, is “Chacah” pronounced, “khaw-saw,’’” meaning to flee for protection to put trust in (God), and to confide or hope in (God). Notice that these are not three separate definitions but more of a step by step procedure. Taking refuge in God is an everyday decision to stay under His wings of authority and shelter; we seek protection, we trust Him and know with confidence that our hope is in Him, and not some wish or positive thinking ruled by happenstance and coincidences.

This is a mouthful, a lot to chew on. Pardon the pun, but it is a taste of the good life, because God is good and good to us. Once we experience God’s goodness we are expected to express it to others. Commit today, and every day to bless, praise, boast in the Lord, be humble, rejoice, magnify, and exalt God alone and together.
