GODLY BLUES
February 27, 2018

Prayer: We pray for Christian teachers to be discerning of the hearts of students… to lead them to God’s truth and His love. May we remember we have no power in ourselves.  We look to You to accomplish Your will in our schools and through our influence.  Amen.

Scripture:  But mark this:  There will be terrible times in the last days.  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good.. 2 Timothy 3:1-3

Today I am sickened by what I see in my students’ lives: the things and persons they admire and imitate, those things their thoughts settle on, the ignorance of right, their abuse of each other and adults, their selfishness and blindness to others’ needs, their lack of conscience about wrong, their unpreparedness for life’s hardships and disappointments, a disregard for good things—learning, the arts, compassion for others, and half-heartedness toward their school work. They seem to care only about the pleasure and fun of the moment above all other things.

How can we as teachers hope to change or even influence this generation? We are up against such odds. At least, knowing Christ gives me confidence that He stays here with me, and has a point to my teaching at this time with these particular students. Perhaps my teaching won’t be effective with many, but I can pray that God will make an impression on them regarding their sinful attitudes, and will confront them with His holiness and love for them.

We as believers in Christ must pray that a new wind of the Spirit will blow through us and use us. We are powerless in ourselves.

O Breath of Life, come sweeping through us,
Revive Thy Church with life and power;
O Breath of Life, come, cleanse, renew us,
And fit Thy Church to meet this hour.

Revive us, Lord! Is zeal abating,
While harvest fields are vast and white?
Revive us, Lord, the world is waiting,
Equip Thy Church to spread the light.

from the hymn, O Breath of Life by Bessie Porter Head.

    This must be our prayer each day. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to interact with many students in a different venue than I did during my professional career. I see more than a glimmer of hope in these interactions but realize that these students who are participating in programs like Renaissance or the Optimist Oratorical contest may not represent the larger body but they are open to God’s leadership and He will use them and us to accomplish his purposes if we continue to pray and strive to allow him to lead us even into the fiery furnace. Thank you again, Shirley, for your continue wise counsel.
